Does Cold Plunging Help With a Hangover? What the Science Actually Says (2026)

Quick answer: No study has ever tested cold-water immersion as a hangover cure — this is genuinely unresearched territory, not just an under-marketed one. A hangover is driven mainly by alcohol suppressing vasopressin (causing dehydration) and by an inflammatory response, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). A cold plunge doesn’t address either mechanism, and a 2025 systematic review in PLOS One found cold-water immersion actually increases inflammatory markers immediately afterward, not reduces them. Worse, plunging while hungover stacks two real risks on top of each other: the dehydration from drinking, and the sudden blood-pressure and heart-rate spike of the cold shock response — a combination worth treating with real caution, not curiosity.

What a hangover actually is

A hangover isn’t one single problem — it’s a cluster of overlapping ones, and the two best-documented drivers, per NIAAA, are:

  • Dehydration. Alcohol suppresses vasopressin, the hormone that tells your kidneys to retain water. That’s why you lose more fluid than you actually drank, and why thirst, fatigue, and headache are such consistent hangover symptoms.
  • Inflammation. A night of heavy drinking is followed by an upregulation of cytokines and prostaglandins — inflammatory signaling molecules — which NIAAA notes may contribute to the general malaise of a hangover.

Two other commonly cited mechanisms are weaker than they’re usually presented. Acetaldehyde, a toxic byproduct of alcohol metabolism, has vasodilatory and gastrointestinal effects, but NIAAA specifically notes only limited evidence directly ties blood acetaldehyde levels to how bad a hangover feels. And electrolyte loss — the entire premise behind most “hangover cure” electrolyte drinks — has not been shown by research to correlate with hangover severity, per NIAAA. Neither claim is fabricated marketing, exactly, but both are weaker than the confident language sold around them.

What cold-water immersion is actually shown to do

None of the research below was conducted on hungover subjects. This is what cold plunging does in general, which is the closest thing available to evidence-based reasoning about whether any of it would plausibly help.

A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis in PLOS One (Cain, Brinsley, Bennett, Nelson, Maher & Singh) is the most comprehensive recent look at cold-water immersion’s physiological effects. Two findings matter most here:

  • Inflammatory markers rose, not fell, both immediately after immersion and again at the one-hour mark — a statistically significant increase the authors attribute to the metabolic stress of cold exposure (glycogenolysis) rather than a true anti-inflammatory effect.
  • Norepinephrine spiked rapidly during immersion (within 2-15 minutes), part of the well-known “cold shock response” — a sudden sympathetic nervous system activation that also drives up heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate. Cortisol effects, by contrast, were modest and inconsistent across studies.

The same review did find a delayed reduction in perceived stress at the 12-hour mark post-immersion, though not at other timepoints — an interesting mood finding, but not a hangover-specific one, and not large enough to build a recovery claim on.

Put plainly: the mechanism most people assume is happening — “cold reduces inflammation, therefore it calms a hangover” — runs backward from what the current research actually shows for acute cold exposure. The alertness jolt from norepinephrine is real. Reduced inflammation, in the short term, is not.

The safety problem: alcohol and cold shock don’t mix well

This is the part hangover-cure content usually skips, and it’s the best-supported section of this entire topic.

Cold shock is a real, documented risk on its own. Sudden cold-water immersion triggers an involuntary gasp reflex, hyperventilation, and a sharp drop in your ability to hold your breath — the American Heart Association has specifically warned that this response is a leading cause of drowning, even among strong swimmers, because it can happen before panic or exhaustion ever set in.

Alcohol does not protect you from it — and may add risk. A 1997 study in the European Journal of Applied Physiology and Occupational Physiology (Mekjavic, Tipton, et al.) immersed 16 subjects in 59°F (15°C) water with and without alcohol in their system (average blood alcohol around 105 mg/100ml). Alcohol reduced initial breathing rate slightly but did not significantly change heart rate, tidal volume, or cooling rate — the researchers concluded alcohol was “unlikely to reduce the risk of drowning,” meaning it doesn’t blunt the dangerous part of cold shock, it just adds impaired judgment and coordination on top of an already stressful physiological event. Separate research has also found alcohol lowers the body’s vasoconstriction threshold, meaning an intoxicated person loses core heat faster during cold exposure — relevant to hypothermia risk on longer or colder exposures, distinct from the immediate cold-shock findings above.

Layer that onto a hangover specifically, and you’re combining: fluid loss from suppressed vasopressin, a cardiovascular system already working harder to compensate for dehydration, and — if you’re still metabolizing residual alcohol — a body that responds to cold shock no differently than usual, just with worse judgment about how long to stay in. None of that makes a hangover plunge instantly dangerous for a healthy adult doing a brief, controlled dip well after their last drink. It does mean “the morning after a heavy night” is exactly the wrong time to push past your usual plunge duration or temperature.

What actually helps a hangover instead

  • Water and food, not a plunge. NIAAA ties hangover symptoms most directly to vasopressin-driven fluid loss — replacing that fluid is the direct fix, and there’s no research showing cold exposure substitutes for it.
  • Don’t over-invest in electrolytes. NIAAA notes research hasn’t established a clear link between electrolyte disruption and hangover severity, so plain water and a normal meal do most of the real work.
  • Time is doing more than you think. Your liver clears alcohol at a fixed rate regardless of what else you do — rest lets the rest of the process (inflammation settling, sleep debt repaying) run its course.
  • If you do plunge, keep it ordinary. Stick to your usual temperature and duration rather than a longer or colder session — this isn’t the day to push past what you’d normally do, given the added cardiovascular and dehydration load already in play.
  • Skip it entirely if you’re still intoxicated, not just hungover — the 1997 cold-shock research is specific to alcohol still in the system, and “wait until you’re actually sober” is the simplest way to sidestep that risk entirely.
