The one real study, and what it actually found

The closest thing to direct evidence is a pilot study published in Clinical Rheumatology (Oosterveld et al., 2009, Vol. 28, Issue 1, pp. 29-34; PMID 18685882), run out of the University of Twente/Saxion in the Netherlands. Researchers enrolled 17 patients with rheumatoid arthritis and 17 with ankylosing spondylitis — both chronic autoimmune joint diseases — and gave each group eight infrared sauna sessions (framed as whole-body hyperthermia) over 4 weeks.

Two different timeframes produced two different results. Within a single session, pain and stiffness dropped in a statistically significant way — p<0.05 for the RA group, p<0.001 for the AS group. Across the full 4-week study, the trend was positive but did not reach statistical significance. The treatment was well tolerated: no adverse effects, no exacerbation of disease, and no meaningful change in disease-activity scores.

The numbers that don’t check out

Search for “sauna joint pain” and you’ll run into specific-sounding claims — a “47% pain reduction,” a “42% decrease in IL-6,” a “31% reduction in TNF-α” — usually attributed loosely to “a study.” We traced these back through several wellness-brand blogs and could not find them in the actual Oosterveld et al. 2009 abstract, which reports p-values for pain and stiffness, not percentage reductions, and doesn’t mention IL-6 or TNF-α at all. These figures may originate from a different, smaller, or unpublished source that’s been mislabeled as this study — or they may not trace to any primary source. Either way, we’re not repeating them as fact.
